Has anyone been pregnant with crohn's disease and hypothyroidism?
I am having a rough pregnancy. This is #4 and I am feeling really sick and uncomfortable. I was diagnosed with crohn’s disease 3 years ago and was told that I had hypothyroidism with my second pregnancy. throughout that pregnancy, my thryoid issue got better and for a while after that my thryoid was fine. Soon after I had my second child, I found out that I have crohn’s disease. In 2007, I had my 3rd child and had no issue with my thryoid. I am now 8 weeks pregnant with my 4th and was told that I have hypothyroidism. I had been experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism a few months before I got pregnant again. I have been dealing with spastic colon, diarrhea, nausea, extreme fatigue, lightheadedness, and feeling extremely cold almost all the time. I am currently on levothyroxine for the hypothyroidism and am taking a prenatal vitamin. I am just looking for some advice or information on my situation or someone else who has dealt with this. I don’t have time to be going to the dr everyday. Has anyone been in this situation or are you dealing with it now?
I only want answers from people who actually want to help me. I don’t want just for someone to tell me that they have never been there or don’t know what I’m talking about. That is a little rude.

Check out the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s site. They have topics on diet, women’s issues, a live chat & hotline run by healthcare experts as well as an open forum where you can post questions to other women who are in the same situation as yourself.
Check into it as you will get more honest answers you are looking for and actually get to speak with women who are pregnant and have CD.
best of luck to you.
no haven’t been there sorry
I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I absolutley hate it sometimes. I wasn’t able to get my pills, (I am also on levothyroxine) and was dealing with straight nausea for 3 days. My hands are always ridiculously dry no matter how much lotion I use. I have been taking my pills steadily though and most of the symptoms get better. I am currently going to my doctor every 3 months to get blood work done to check my levels.
What you can do is just take one visit to your doctor to have your levels checked to make sure they are alright. They might need to change your dosage since pregnancy can mess things up a bit.
I was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease in 1993. I was hospitalized twice in a year – once for a month and once for 3 weeks. I had a blood transfusion and was on azathioprine, which is a drug given to transplant patients. It’s a severe immunosuppressant so I had to go for blood tests every week.
Anyhow, my Crohn’s disease is pretty much under control. With my first pregnancy, I felt GREAT but had a major flare-up when my baby was 6 months old requiring hospitalization and IV steroids followed by oral steroids for 8 weeks. Once it was under control, I was fine until about 3 months into this pregnancy. I became very ill just before Christmas and my doctor put me on Prednisone (a steroid) and Mesavent (a 5-ASA drug). I finished the prednisone in February but I will be on the mesavent indefinitely. I was very worried about taking this medication while pregnant, but it is safe and definitely safer than not taking the medication. I was so sick I couldn’t eat and was getting weak and dizzy from not eating enough. I’m fine now on the medication. Diet also plays a large role for some people – for me coffee is killer.
Good luck, and feel free to e-mail me if you need more info.
I’m 35 weeks pregnant w my 1st & I to have hypothyroidism. I’m taking levothyroxine, cytomel & a prenatal vitamin. I had a miscarriage @ 12 weeks a year ago, so I’ve been very nervous about this pregnancy. I have felt like crap the whole pregnancy. I threw up every day for the 1st 6 &1\2 months. I have also had extreme fatigue, lightheadedness & I go from burning up to freezing cold. My dr says that this is normal & the baby looks great. They checked my thyroid levels again @ 20 weeks & they changed my dosage. So i would recommend doing that. I hope this helps.
