what is the difference between mild and moderate diarrhea?
This is a serious question ; I am on an antibiotic called clindamyacin; for those of you who know its pretty potent and has some poteltial nasty side effects; I was very sick with a surprise abcess on my chin that welled my face up like i had eggs in my mouth, so I am grateful for it as after 4 days there’s hardly a trace of the nasty infection.
However I’ve had the runs all day fairly frequently and its sore in that area now.
I am this close to taking an immodium or something. The instructions on the paper said mild diarrhea is a known side effect but moderate to severe is different as the medication is known to cause ulcerative colitis while on it or even after taking it.
So, what’s the actual difference clinically between mild and moderate to severe diarrhea?
Diarrhea is a VERY common side effect of antibiotic therapy. The two almost always go hand in hand. It happens because the antibiotic kills the bacteria that live in your intestines along with the ones that cause your infection.
If you are not vomiting, and are able to keep fluids down, you don’t have to worry much about electrolyte imbalance. That’s much more a problem when diarrhea and vomiting are combined.
Once all of the medication has been taken (YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD TAKE ALL OF IT… RIGHT???), your intestines, and bowel movements, will return to normal.
What you should look out for is bleeding. If you start to notice blood in your stool, you need to call your doctor. Otherwise keep your fluid intake up, and get some of those ‘Charmine’ wet wipes.

how often you are going per day and how much you expell when you do go…is the difference.
I suggest eating A LOT of yogurt…because taking an antibiotic like clindamycin kills ALL the bacterial in your body, not just the stuff in your mouth…so when all your normal flora (bacteria and such that are normally in you, and on you) is cleared out, you almost always get diarrhea. Yogurt had Lactobacilli which is a great bacteria to full the niche for you…so eat lots of yogurt
