What do you think could be the cause of a dog that has chronic diarrhea?
The Vet has seen him twice, put him on 2 different antibiotics. While taking the antibiotics, the diarrhea subsides, only to return 36 hours after stopping the medication. The puppy is a Rottweiler, about 13 weeks old, and has been tested for Parvo. We’re worried about him because he is on special food that is gentle for the intestinal system as well, though nothing seems to be working.
I would suggest trying a new vet.
Go to another vet. Something is wrong, if its not his food then its an illness or soemthing.
I would consult another vet for a second opinion.
Has he been tested for Giardia? If not, you may want the vet to check for that, it can also cause chronic diarrhea.
Has the vet suggested a bland diet (rice with boiled chicken or chopped meat)? Small meals fed throughout the day instead of one or two larger meals.
My dog had the same problem when he was a puppy.. in the end I found it was the food. His digestive system was just really finicky. It took me time to find a diet that was right for him. I found that foods containing probiotics were the absolute best. I’ve also noticed that you can buy probiotics at the pharmacy or pet food store and supplement your dogs diet. If you can’t get that yogurt will suffice as it contains the same probiotics. In any case I’d recommend a food such as Performatrin Ultra. it’s what I fed my dog that cleared up his diarrhea.
Has he been checked for worms? It could be that or an allergy to something he is eating. Feed him cooked rice with chicken broth for a few days and that should help with the diarrhea. My dog has a lot of food allergies and can not eat dog food with wheat, or preseratives. Until we found the right food, we would put him back on rice and chicken broth to sooth his intestines.
