what can you feed your cat if she has diarrhea?
She had a parasite in her intestines. The vet gave her flagyl which took it away. 3 weeks later she had diarrhea. They tested her feces but no parasite. The vet said to change her food. I now feed her Nutro for Seniors, no wet food, but she still has soft stools. She is 10 yrs old. Any suggestions?

It might be as simple as eliminating dry food from kitty’s diet, but even if it’s not that easy, Dr. Lisa’s site has good information about this issue, since she had to deal with it herself.

Flagyl is used for Gardia. and doesn’t always get rid of the parasite. And sometime they don’t show up in a fecal exam. Panicur can also be used for this. Human Anti Diarrhea medication can be used in cats, ask your vet about this.

make sure she’s drinking enough water – just like in children diarrhea is a sign of dehydration. When my cat had intestinal parasites I gave him small amounts of boiled chicken and rice and had plenty of water out for him – and he’s great now.
I would try boiled chicken (skinless) with white rice. Our vet said that is a healthy meal for any animal with a stomach upset or loose stools. Besides it tastes good and she is apt to eat it. Dont season it…. just by some chicken wings or drumsticks (whichever is cheaper) boil it till done, drain the water and fat, remove the skin and add small peices of it to some boiled white rice.
The chicken gives her some flavour and nutrients (not a lot but some) and the rice will help in producing formed stools. Plus its easy to digest since she is an older cat.

if there are no more choices, give your dog pedi-alite elctrofluids.it is in the baby section.it is made to help them with their elctrolides.it helps them to not become weak and dehydrated.it also stops diarrhea.it’s made for babies but it’ll work.
i’m not sure what diet she should be one, but i know that to help w/ the diarrhea you can give her a dose of pepto bismal. that should help ease her stomach, and it won’t hurt her.

Hi there…many times changing the food suddenly rather than gradually will cause bowel distress in felines as well. As a general rule it’s best to mix the old food with the new food over a course of several weeks. For example you’d serve 3/4 of the old food mixed with 1/4 of the new food for one week then the next week 1/2 to 1/2 for another week and then 1/4 of the old to 3/4 of the new in the final week before the 100% change over.
Adding a teaspoon of pure canned pumpkin (plain not spiced) will add fibre to the diet helping the stools firm up.
