How to stop my dogs diarrhea?
My dog just had puppies last week and has had diarrhea for the last 4 days. I called my Vet and they took a stool sample and said it was fine. He said to give her Kaopectate and see if this helps. Nope, she still has it. Plus I do not want to give her too much medication since her pups will get that too. I am calling the Vet again tomorrow, but thought I would ask now: What else should I try?
To begin with, dietary changes can be very helpful and effective. Sometimes reducing your pet’s food for a day or two can help to quickly clear up diarrhea. Another technique is to feed your dog a homemade, bland diet until the symptoms have passed. In cases of large intestine-related diarrhea, a high-fiber diet may prove effective. Certain homeopathic remedies and supplements can also provide relief for dogs experiencing diarrhea.
I would suggest a natural remedy while your dog is nursing the new born puppies. Try using http://www.petwellbeing.com/dog-diarrhea-p73.cfm for your dog’s diarrhea instead of any drugs and see if that will work.
Homeopathic remedies contain natural ingredients, some of which have properties that can effectively reduce the discomfort of diarrhea and the length of time that it lasts for. Natural substances such as barberry and peony, for example, have antibiotic properties that can help to combat diarrhea-causing bacteria. Other ingredients such as ginger, myrrh, and thyme reduce pain, spasms, and inflammation, thereby reducing the troubling symptoms of diarrhea and increasing your pet’s comfort.
I boil up rice and mix it with a little white meat, skinless, boneless chicken for my dogs when they have diarrhea.
I also take them to the vet to get w/d canned – but that is basically rice and chicken, so the homemade is good too.
Give her canned pumpkin. Not the pie filling with seasonings in it, just plain pumpkin. Libbys is one brand. This is fantastic for stopping diarrhea or for correcting constipation in dogs. Don’t know why it works for both and so well, but it does.
Canned pumkin is a good source of fiber for a dog. Get the plain pumkin, not the pie pumkin with the spices in it. Mix in about 4 tablespoons with her food, or "fource feed" her it, if she won’t take it on her own.
Pumkin is known to help "straighten out" the digestive tract, it can stop diarhea, or help a constipated dog "go" again. It is safe to give to a lactating mama. You can follow up in 4 hours with two more table spoons of pumkin. You can also take her off of dog food, and cook her whole chicken with brown rice for a while, but keep in mind suddenly changing her diet altogether like that can cause worse diahrea at first. Check with the vet before changing your dog’s diet to chicken and brown rice. But do try the pumkin!
as rescue member said use rice
You’re doing the right thing by calling your vet. Evidently your vet is not worried about it being serious. Good luck to you and your new doggy family.
There are some vet products that I have used that worked REALLY well.

GET YOUR DOG SPAYED!!!!!!!!
Here is yet another backyard breeder bringing in another unwanted litter into the world.
With all the dogs being put down in shelters everyday, HOW DARE YOU BRING ANOTHER ill lbred litter into the world. UGH!!
The ONLY reason to breed is for the betterment of the breed. What did you do to better the breed? I’m guessing not a damn thing. Stop using your dog as a cash crop and get her spayed for crying out loud!
I USE PE PTO-BISMOL AND GO BY THE WEIGHT OF THE DOG,IT WORKS FOR ME.
You can try giving your girl some canned pumpkin (not pie filling that has spices added). My dog loves it.
I would give your dog nothing until further consulting your vet
green grass
Kaopectate has changed their formula and it is NOW toxic to cats with the same added ingredient as Pepto. I know you have a dog but I thought Id interject that.
Anyhow you want something with Pectin in it {the ingredient Kaopectate USED to have}. I bought Lambert Kay brand DIAR-RHEA medication from Pet-co and it worked like a charm!! I mixed it in her rice.
I have also used Pureed Canned Pumkin as well , but my dog didnt like it & force feeding a dog is way to traumatic for them !!! AND ME…. I mixed it with her rice and she will eat it if I pretend it mine off my plate!!!
