How to get rid of diarrhea caused by antibiotics?
I just started taking antibiotics about 3 days ago following minor surgery. Now I have terrible diarrhea! What do you recommend besides BRAT? I’m going out of town tomorrow and would rather not be glued to a toilet seat the whole time! ):
The reason you have diarrhea is because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your system as well as the bad.
Acidophilus will restore the good bacteria and restore the balance to your system.
Imodium works for me. My Mom swares by burnt toast. Just don’t get dehydrated – that would really suck. Good luck!
I guess Imodium is the good old standby. If you have lost a lot of fluid it would be a good idea to take a rehydrating solution (ask the pharmacist) which restores the balance of different salts in your body. When you’ve completed the course of antibiotics eat plenty of live yogurt – the antibiotics destroy the good gut bacteria as well as the baddies and the yogurt puts them back. if you hate plain live yogurt buy some acidophilus capsules which will do the same job.
Take an over-the-counter anti-diarrheal med like Kaopectate,Pepto-Bismol,Immodium.
Make sure that what you take contains Loperamide, because it slows down the speed of fluids moving through your bowels.
Bismuth subsalicylate is very important as well b/c it works to balance the way fluids move through your bowels. It also binds toxins from bacteria that are causing the diarrhea.
