Do puppies get diarrhea when it is time to switch their food?
My puppy is about 7.5 months, and has had mild diarrhea for the past few days. I am taking him to the vet, but I wanted to know if this is normal, as a signal to switch from puppy chow to a more mature mix….
No, it shouldn’t cause the diarrhea, it could a little but not a lot, not for three days. You should get him a check up and it won’t hurt to switch is foods. Give him pedialyte to balance his system out and plenty of fluids so he doesn’t get dehydrated. If you have a syringe and some Karo or waffle syrup, give him about 2 tsps and that should help with his sugar levels which get messed up in pups when things like this happen. That should make him feel better but you need to find out why the diarrhea, I only advise a vet if it is needed in my opinion. Hope he gets well soon, good luck.
No, it means something he has already eaten is disagreeing with him.
Most puppy chow is a waste of money, anyway; switch him when you want.
Puppies are ready to eat Adult food at 12 months of age.
If you switch brands of food to quickly, it can cause diarreah. Always mix some of the old food with the new food to gradually switch over to a different food.
No, that would not cause diarrhea. You switch foods because a dog’s dietary requirements change when its no longer growing, just like any animal. Usually one switches food at 18 months. Smaller breeds earlier. Make an appointment with your vet. It might be due to something he ate, parasites or some other illness.
Yes they can…Even adult dogs can have the same thing….Feed your dogs quality food…You probably read the labels on the food you eat,you should do the same for your pets…You,d be surprised at the junk they put in regular dog food…
If he has diarrhea, it could be a number of things. It won’t be because he’s ready for adult food. Did you open a new bag of food? The lot numbers vary from batch to batch and the formula can change slightly. This could cause loose stool. Do you live close to water? Giardia is a micro organism that is carried by water fowl and can be very difficult to detect on a fecal exam. Too many treats can cause loose stool as well as table food. Then , of course, there’s always the possibility of him being a bit wormy. Taking him in is the best thing but think about these other issues if it happens again.
