What should I expect for this colonoscopy?
I have one coming up this month because the doctors think I have Ulcertive Colitis.
I have one coming up this month and I’m pretty worried because the doctors think I have ulcertive colitis. I’m only 19 years old and it’s not very common for people under 50 to have this done. What should I expect before, during, and after?
Thank you!
I am one of the few people who will answer this who has never been sedated for a colonoscopy.
The day before you will begin prepping for the procedure. Most will tell your the prep is the worst part. Though I have never used GoLytle or HalfLytle, I can attest the prep is the worst part. Do not cheat on this because if you are not squeaky clean inside the colonoscopy will have to be repeated. DO invest in quality toilet paper or wipes. Stay away from the John Wayne toilet paper (rough, tough and don’t take shit off anyone). Get some lotion to use because you will be pooping a lot.
You being 19 and anxious means you will be sedated. The first drug in the cocktail is to take the edge off so you are relaxed. Then depending on the doctor you will either be in twilight or something similar. You may have one of the drugs like Versed. You’ll may be out of it or you may be partially awake; but, you will not remember any of it.
From my perspective being totally awake, there was some discomfort. The initial inspection of the tube in the anus feels like nothing. Then the doctor injects air or CO2 in the colon to inflate it to allow for the passage of the colonoscope. There is some discomfort (you won’t remember it) mostly from the air once the doctor gets to the end of the large intestine is when the actual exam is done. If there are any polyps the doctor will remove them and retrieve the tissue samples. There is no pain during this stage.
You will wake up in recovery, be unable to drive or do anything else requiring thought the rest of the day. Here’s where the ironic part comes in, before you are released you will have to sign the paper that says don’t sign any legal documents or operate machinery or drive a car.
The following day life is back to normal. You may even think you we’re awake for it and remember it; but, most likely you won’t remember anything about it. Other than the graham crackers and drink afterwards.
I don’t think it is not a common procedure for people under 50. Lot of people with digestive problems have this kind of investigation. I will have it in one month also. A bit worried but will have it because I want to be ok.
Normally they give you a mild anesthetic (that is for the moment when they introduce the tube). In some countries (or depending from clinic to clinic, etc.) the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The intestines from what I read have no pain receptors, so it won’t be painful. This investigation is much recommended because it is one of the best diagnosis alternatives.
That also because during colonoscopy the doc might take a small biopsy from the inside of the intestine in order to confirm the diagnosis. Make sure you prepare correctly the day before the procedure.
And don’t panic. Wait for the results first and the doc will guide you after. You will live long years if you take good care of you, of what you eat and follow doc indications and treatment. Cheer up.
