I am allergic to laxatives but am due for a colonoscopy?
I have severe reactions to laxatives that leave me in immense pain. I have had to cancel my colonoscopy twice because I can’t do the prep laxatives. There must be something else I can do? The doctors office only suggested fasting for several days?? Gotta be something more gentle out there I can do??
It’s time to find a new gastroenterologist. You may be allergic to Polyethylene Glycol based laxatives (GoLytle, Coltyte, Miralax, etc) but there are other choices. The fleet prep kit #3 is the only one left on the market as the government was concerned that today’s population was too stupid to be able to take a simple large volume enema on their own as a prep. Seriously, I would politely tell the doctor (not his staff because they don’t care) that since they aren’t concerned enough to find an alternative you are going to find your own and it doesn’t include your current doctor.
Prior to the recall because of people who can’t read directions getting lawyers to protect them, I used to use the Fleet Phospha Soda laxative as a prep. Instead of mixing it in water as they directed (because it’s like drinking a glass of salt water), I used to chug the little bottle and then chase it with lots of sports drinks (not red or purple), water, white grape juice, etc. I would take two doses of this and it worked. Now, I will be forced to find something else.
Try different kinds of laxatives. My father is a gastroenterologist and says that you cannot be allergic to every kind of laxative. If you are getting cramps that is just what laxatives feel like for everyone. I hope this helps
I am in no way a doctor or a professional but have worked in a gastroenterology clinic..there was a gatorade prep with Miralax..you can do a search on the web and find it. I would definitely check and make sure its okay to use. this is what I did because I kept vomiting the other preps up and kept gagging.
