Don't laugh but, did you ever want to squirm or yell during a colonoscopy procedure? was it painful?
I have a lot of anxiety because it’s only 2 and a half weeks before my first colonoscopy. I think about it constantly.
It’s the long hose that scares me.
Oh No! Two and a half more weeks of your whining. It is increasingly obvious that you’re a child or adolescent. Others have told you this; but, like a child you want a different answer. They are going to give you happy drugs to relax you and you really won’t know about it or care about it.
Now would you like some cheese with that whine?
They give you anesthesia so you don’ t really feel anything. A friend told me he requested to be knocked out and the doctor obliged.
Don’t worry it’s not that bad. I had one and woke up during the procedure and watched the inside of my colon.
Minor discomfort at most. If you can deal with that you shouldn’t have a problem.
The process of cleaning your colon though can be a pain. They give you some laxative that makes you go until your colon is totally clean.
When the doctor gave it to me he said "you’ll hate me for this".
I have had this done a hundred times and in the beginning they used conscious sedation and gave me an IV drip of Versed and Fentanyl to keep me sedated enough to do the procedure without me having any discomfort, but I stayed awake the whole time and my breathing never had to be assisted. In response to your specific question about pain, fentanyl is one of the most potent opiate pain killers known to man and is something like 80 times more powerful than morphine. On top of that the Versed is a drug that causes a type of drug induced amnesia so if it did hurt you wouldn’t remember it when it’s all over. I don’t remember any of this but when I was getting this done I had a bad reaction and I flipped out and started fighting the doctor and the other people in the room and they ended up not being able to do it that day. Now, my doctor refuses to do the procedure that way and he will bring in an anesthesiologist when I need a colonoscopy who gives me more potent drugs that actually stop my breathing and causes total unconsciousness which includes having no response to pain or anything that is going on around me.
It’s completely normal to be nervous — I was. I had a colonoscopy & endoscopy yesterday, and I was completely out during the procedure. I was in the room and the doctor said she was giving me the medicine, and next thing I knew I woke up in a different room. I still have some bloating in my lower abdomen from the colonoscopy, and I feel kinda blah, but other than that I’m fine.
