Colonoscopy preparation solution flavorings or techniques – any suggestions or advice?
Am dreading my first colonoscopy shortly and received flavor packets with my TriLyte solution. The choices are citrus berry, orange, lemon lime, cherry and pineapple. I’ve heard the prep is the worst part of the test. I’d hate to mix the solution with the flavoring and make matters worse. Benefit of your experience would be appreciated. Are there flavorings or techniques that make this process easier?
My flavor choice would be lemon-lime. From experience though, chill it in the ‘fridge and then drink it over ice.
Other answers are good as well, but let me add one thing: Buy some baby-wipes and/or vaseline. Need I explain?
Hope all goes and turn out well. Ask for plenty of Versed and you won’t remember a thing! Good luck to you!
Any flavor is sort of nasty. The colder you make it the easier to handle. Also, great if you can chug (I couldn’t so I used a straw and kept it going down). It’s just extremely salty tasting. To some it’s not too bad. I don’t use salt at all so it was hard for me to drink. I had to do Fleets Phospha Soda and Mag. Citrate. Maybe "drink" will be easier to drink. Just drink it fast maybe have a little sip of sprite after. I was allowed to mix mine with Sprite or Ginger Ale. I was also allowed clear liquids after my "cocktail". Good luck to you.
Hi- I can represent ur anxiety. What ever you do – DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING RED- NO red jello- NO red juice- That will be a big bad thing. It makes ur colon look like it has blood in it. YES, the prep is the worst part, but, has improved over the years. Take the day off work the day of ur prep, of course. Stay close to a toilet. Just remember, this is a test for preventive measures, and the prep will help rule out any colon problems. I commend you for going through this not so fun procedure, but, it COULD save ur life! The benefits are a given, if there is something going on. I drank lots of 7-up- Ginger Ale, Chicken Broth, and Yellow Jello. Ur TriLyte solution should have very precise instructions. I will not lie to you- Sometimes it does feel as if you are inducing the flu- BUT, the preps are better than they used to be. I’ve worked in the Medical Field over 27 years. It was SO ROUGH on the Patients gettting this done. Enemas until clear, castor oil, etc. Now, I believe you end up with just a Fleets enema in ur kit. SUCH a difference. REMEMBER, too, they will give you a mild sedative during this procedure, so you won’t even know what is going on. Truly, if you have any concerns, call the Local ER, or ur Pharmacist to ask about the flavor packets. There is always someone to answer such questions to rule out ur concerns. It is also useful to have ur prep solution in the fridge, drink it down fast, and be close to the bathroom. The adding of the flavorings offered will not make matters worse. It is offered to make the solution more pleasant tasting. I hope this helped. Good luck and Take care! I will say a Pray for ur results to be GREAT! Again, I commend you for getting this done. It is awful to hold this off, and people do!
Tastewise, I vote for berry or cherry. You are right the worst part is the prep and embarrassment which is lessened by the fact that they drug you during the procedure so you don’t remember it. You can hide your face under the sheet or blanket so they don’t recognize you and you don’t have to face them. Just pretend it’s happening to someone else, not you. Also, I had to have someone drive me home. I agree with the person who said to get vaseline and baby wipes and they probably told you to do a Fleets enema in the morning of the colonoscopy before going in and not to eat anything. Mine didn’t hurt at all even though they removed a few polyps.
